HENRY D’SOUZA The Voice That Made Konkani Hearts Dance

A Tribute to a Legendary Mangalorean Konkani Singer, Composer, Musician and a True Son of Konkani Culture
There are singers who entertain us.
There are singers who inspire us.
And then there are those rare artistes whose voices become part of the collective memory of a people.

Henry D’Souza belonged to that rare and treasured category.
For generations of Konkani lovers, his name is inseparably linked with melody, rhythm, humour, romance, nostalgia and the infectious spirit of Mangalorean Konkani music. His unmistakable voice and vibrant performances made him one of the most loved personalities of the golden era of Konkani entertainment.
But behind the legendary singer was an equally remarkable human being—simple, humble, approachable and completely free from the airs of fame.
That is the Henry D’Souza I remember.

A LEGEND IS BORN
Henry D’Souza was not merely a singer.
He was a singer, composer, lyricist, musician and stage performer, and one of those artistes who helped give modern Mangalorean Konkani music its distinctive popular character.
He possessed a rare ability to take a Konkani melody, give it an infectious rhythm and present it in a way that immediately connected with ordinary people.
His music carried the flavour of our soil.
It was lively, warm, humorous and deeply rooted in Konkani culture.
His association with Konkani theatre further strengthened his contribution. He composed music for numerous Konkani stage productions and worked with some of the most celebrated names in the Konkani cultural world.
His music also travelled far beyond Mangalore.
Through radio, recordings, stage performances and the Konkani diaspora, his songs reached Bombay, Goa, Sri Lanka, the Gulf and communities across the world.

“YE YE KATRINA” — A SONG FOR THE AGES
Among his many contributions, “Ye Ye Katrina” occupies a special place.
The song became an evergreen favourite and one of the most recognisable numbers in Konkani popular music. Its infectious rhythm and memorable presentation carried it far beyond the traditional Konkani audience.
Henry had that rare gift of creating songs that people did not merely listen to—they sang them, remembered them and celebrated with them.
His music made people move.
It made people laugh.
It made people sing along.
And it made Konkani gatherings come alive.
That is why Henry D’Souza was much more than a recording artiste.
He was an entertainer in the truest sense of the word.

THE BARKURIAN CONNECTION
Henry D’Souza’s story has a particularly special chapter in the cultural history of Barkurians in Mumbai.
St Peter’s Association (SPA), Barkur – Mumbai, the umbrella organisation of Barkurians in Bombay, took birth on 17 March 1988.
One of the cherished traditions of the Barkurian community was to organise an entertainment programme during the Diwali holidays in the first week of November—a time when Barkurians living in Bombay could come together, renew friendships, celebrate their roots and enjoy Konkani culture.

But the Barkurian youngsters had already created a strong cultural tradition before SPA came into existence.
The SPCYA, the platform of Barkurian youngsters established in 1985, had presented the memorable Konkani drama “Mogachi Desvatt” with the legendary Wilfy Rebimbus troupe at St Mary’s Auditorium, Mazgaon on 2nd November 1986.
It was a spectacular success.
The auditorium was packed.
The twelve immortal songs associated with the production added to the magic, and the performance became a cherished memory for the Barkurian community.
The following year, in November 1987, public demand brought another memorable programme—the Wilfy Musical Nite on 7th November.
Once again, St Mary’s Auditorium was overflowing.
Such was the enthusiasm that many people had to stand and watch the programme.
The Barkurian community in Bombay had clearly developed a tremendous appetite for quality Konkani entertainment.
Therefore, when SPA Mumbai looked for a new face for its entertainment programme, the choice of Henry D’Souza was both natural and deserving.

THE MEMORABLE “HENRY NITE”
And so came the Henry Nite.
The venue was again the familiar St Mary’s Auditorium, Mazgaon, which had already witnessed the unforgettable Barkurian evenings of Wilfy.
Henry D’Souza brought an entirely new musical flavour.
His name alone generated enormous anticipation.
And the programme with mesmerising Reena DSouza proved to be an instant hit.
Henry’s musical performance formed the heart of the evening, while the farce “Tamaso” by our own Barkurian artists with Harryboy, added humour and theatrical entertainment to the package.
For SPA Mumbai, it was an inspired choice.
For Barkurians, it was another unforgettable evening.
And for the history of Barkurian cultural activities in Bombay, the Henry Nite became yet another milestone in a remarkable tradition of bringing Konkani music and theatre to the community.

MY PERSONAL ENCOUNTER WITH THE LEGEND
My memories of Henry D’Souza, however, go beyond the stage.
I had the privilege of knowing him personally.
At that time, I was serving with Richardson Hindustan Limited, and Henry’s office was also located in the same building at Mahalaxmi, Mumbai.
We would meet during the lunch hours.
By then, Henry D’Souza was already at the peak of his fame in Bombay.
His great Konkani numbers were immensely popular.
He was a recognised name.
He was a star.
Yet whenever I met him, what struck me most was something entirely different.
His simplicity.
There was no ego.
He was remarkably down to earth.
For someone who had achieved such extraordinary popularity, his natural humility was genuinely astonishing.
He behaved like one among us.
And perhaps that was precisely why people loved him so much.

THE MUSICAL TREASURE HOUSE IN GOREGAON:
Henry was residing in Goregaon at that time, and the SPA team had the opportunity to meet him there in connection with the Henry Nite.

What they discovered was fascinating.
Henry possessed an extraordinary personal collection of Konkani music.
There were cassette, audio tapes, discs, records, song books and handwritten files.
There were materials in several languages.
His collection was not merely that of a singer preserving his own recordings.
It represented an entire world of Konkani music.
He had collected songs, compositions and information relating to great artistes from Mangalore, Goa and other Konkani-speaking regions.
And he remembered them.
He knew the singers.
He knew the composers.
He remembered the songs.
He could connect melodies with artistes and generations.
He seemed to carry decades of Konkani musical history in his memory.
Looking back, one could almost describe Henry D’Souza as a living encyclopaedia of Konkani music.
At a time when systematic archives of Konkani popular music were rare, his personal collection represented an invaluable cultural treasure.

A LEGEND WHO SAT AMONG THE PEOPLE:
There was another quality about Henry that deeply impressed me.
Despite his fame, he never behaved as though he belonged to a different world.
He would attend Konkani dramas, musical nites and cultural programmes and sit comfortably among ordinary members of the audience.

He did not always need a special place.
He did not demand VIP treatment.
He did not create a wall between himself and the common people.
He simply enjoyed Konkani entertainment.
That quality is rare in any generation.
And perhaps it explains why Henry’s songs found such a permanent place in the hearts of ordinary Konkani families.
He understood his audience because he remained part of the audience.

THE HELEN–HENRY MAGIC
Henry’s musical journey also included memorable collaborations with some of the finest Konkani artistes of his generation.
His association with the legendary singer Helen DCruz produced songs that remain cherished by Konkani music lovers.
Their voices complemented each other beautifully.
Numbers such as “Chondrem Udevn,” “Sezari,” “Gharacho Divo” and “Katrina” became part of a memorable era of Konkani music.

The Helen–Henry combination and in later years Dr Aparna Mayekar, Reena DSouza represented the magic of a generation when live music, melody, meaningful lyrics and charismatic performers came together to create unforgettable musical experiences.

TAKING KONKANI BEYOND BORDERS:
Henry’s music did not remain confined to Mangalore or Bombay.
His songs reached audiences through radio and recordings, including listeners outside India.
His music found admirers in Sri Lanka and among the worldwide Konkani diaspora.
This was an important contribution.

At a time when Konkani-speaking people were increasingly scattered across cities and countries, music became one of the strongest threads connecting them with their cultural roots.
Henry’s songs travelled with them.
From Mangalore to Bombay.
From Bombay to the Gulf.
From India to Sri Lanka and beyond.
Wherever Konkani people gathered, there was a place for Henry D’Souza’s music.

THE MAN WHO NEVER LET FAME CHANGE HIM:
Awards and recognition naturally followed his contribution.
He was honoured with titles such as “Sangeet Samrat” and “Kala Ratna”, besides receiving recognition from various Konkani organisations.
But perhaps the greatest honour was not any title or award.
It was the affection of ordinary people.
Because Henry never allowed fame to separate him from them.
Success made him famous, but it never made him different.
That is the hallmark of a truly great artiste.

A CULTURAL AMBASSADOR OF KONKANI
Henry D’Souza’s contribution should therefore be viewed in a much larger context.
He was not simply producing entertainment.
He was helping preserve a language and its cultural memory.
For a relatively small linguistic community spread across Mangalore, Mumbai, Goa and the wider world, popular music became one of the most effective ways of keeping Konkani alive.
Henry understood this instinctively.
His songs gave Konkani a popular voice.
His performances gave Konkani a public stage.
His collection preserved the music of earlier generations.
And his humility gave younger artistes an example of how greatness could coexist with simplicity.

THE FINAL CURTAIN:
On 14 August 2026, the Konkani world lost Henry D’Souza at the age of 83.
The stage may have fallen silent.
But his music has not.
For those who knew him, the memories are much more than recordings and performances.
They are memories of a simple man at Mahalaxmi during lunch hour.
A celebrated singer who spoke without arrogance.
A musical treasure keeper in his Malad home.
A man who could remember songs and singers from generations past.
A legend who could sit among ordinary people and watch a Konkani drama or musical nite with genuine enjoyment.
And for Barkurians in Mumbai, he will forever remain part of a special cultural chapter—the unforgettable Henry Nite, which followed the landmark productions of “Mogachi Desvatt” and the Wilfy Musical Nite, and brought another great Konkani artiste into the heart of the Barkurian community.

THE SONG GOES ON:
Perhaps that is the true measure of an artiste.
Not how long he lives.
Not how many awards he receives.
Not how many stages he conquers.
But whether his work continues to live after he is gone.
Henry D’Souza has achieved that immortality.
Whenever ‘Katrina’ or ‘Ami Dogi Sezara’, Sanche Kithen hai tya Bombay shaharachen…….another of his beloved numbers begins to play, memories will return.
Whenever a Konkani gathering breaks into song, his presence will be felt.

Whenever an old recording brings a smile to someone’s face, Henry will be there.
Whenever young Konkani singers discover the music of the golden generation, they will encounter the legacy he helped create.
And whenever the history of Mangalorean Konkani music is written, Henry D’Souza’s name will occupy a place of honour.
He was all in one singer.
composer. musician.
performer.
collector and preserver of Konkani musical heritage.
But above all—
he was a humble human being who loved Konkani and its people.
Farewell, dear Henry D’Souza.
You sang for people.
You gave rhythm to a language.
You preserved the melodies of generations.
You carried Konkani across borders.
You brought joy to thousands.
And despite becoming a legend, you remained one among us.
The stage may have gone silent.
The applause may have faded.
But your songs will continue to echo from generation to generation.
Your voice will live.
Your music will live.
Your memories will live.
Your Konkani legacy will live.
And somewhere, at another Konkani gathering, someone will play one of your immortal songs.
Feet will begin to tap.
Faces will light up.
Memories will return.
And Konkani hearts will dance once again.
Rest in eternal peace, Henry D’Souza.
The singer has left the stage —

Tech-Driven Service, People-First Hospitality: Vidyalaxmi IQAC Gears Up BHS & AHM Students for Industry Readiness

Brahmavara, Udupi | 18 August 2026: In an era where technology is transforming the hospitality landscape while human connection remains at the heart of exceptional service, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Vidyalaxmi Group of Institutions, Brahmavara, Udupi, organised an insightful Placement Orientation Programme for the students of BHS and AHM on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, at the Vidyalaxmi College Auditorium.

Designed as a bridge between academic learning and professional aspirations, the programme aimed to equip students with the knowledge, confidence, professional skills and industry awareness required to navigate the dynamic and competitive world of Hospitality, Aviation, Food & Beverage, and Travel & Tourism.

The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Sawrabh Dobriyal, Assistant Food & Beverage Manager, Scylla Luxury Resort & Spa, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Addressing the students, Mr. Dobriyal emphasised that technology has become an indispensable part of the modern hospitality industry. He highlighted how digital tools, guest-management systems and online platforms are transforming the way hotels, airlines and tourism organisations interact with customers and deliver personalised services.

In an inspiring interaction with the students, he explained that Aviation Management, Hotel Management and Food & Beverage are interconnected facets of the larger Hospitality Management ecosystem, opening a wide spectrum of career opportunities for aspiring professionals. He encouraged students to remain curious, continuously upgrade their skills and embrace technological advancements to stay relevant in an ever-evolving industry.

A significant segment of the programme focused on the placement process and career preparation. Mr. Johnson, AHM Convenor and Event Coordinator, briefed the students on the different stages involved in campus recruitment, beginning with resume building and application procedures, followed by aptitude tests, soft-skills assessment, interview preparation, industrial training and campus placement. He explained the importance of preparing systematically for every stage of recruitment and encouraged students to approach the placement process with confidence, discipline and professionalism.

The session also highlighted the importance of resume building as the first step towards creating a strong professional identity. Students were guided on the need to prepare a clear, attractive and industry-oriented resume that effectively communicates their academic qualifications, skills, internship experience, achievements and career interests.

Mr. Rohan Cardoza, Head of the Department, BHS, particularly emphasised the importance of final-year students preparing themselves well in advance for the recruitment process. He advised students to build an attractive and professional resume while simultaneously developing the knowledge, confidence and communication skills required to face interviews successfully. He reminded students that preparation and continuous self-improvement are essential to compete effectively in today’s highly competitive employment environment.

The orientation programme unfolded around three vital pillars of career readiness—Placement, Internship and Soft Skills. Students were introduced to the various stages of the placement journey, including professional resume preparation, aptitude-test preparation, application procedures, interview strategies and recruiter expectations across the hospitality, aviation and tourism sectors.

The session further shed light on the importance of industrial training and internships as stepping stones from the classroom to the corporate world. Students were encouraged to choose training and internship opportunities strategically, gain meaningful hands-on experience, understand workplace practices, develop industry exposure and build valuable professional networks at an early stage of their careers.

Special emphasis was placed on soft skills and professional personality as essential components of employability. Effective communication, professional grooming, confidence, teamwork, problem-solving ability, adaptability, time management and a genuine service-oriented attitude were highlighted as qualities that can distinguish a candidate in today’s competitive employment landscape.

The programme was graced by Dr. Seema G Bhat, Principal; Mr. Rohan Cardoza, Head of the Department, BHS; and Mr. Johnson, AHM Convenor and Event Coordinator. The presence of Ms. Nema, Assistant Placement Coordinator, Department of Aviation and Hospitality Management; Mr. Ganesh Nayak, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce and Management and IQAC Coordinator, along with teaching faculty and administrative staff, added significance to the programme.

Mr. Johnson, AHM Convenor and Event Coordinator, compered the programme with a graceful and engaging flow, connecting each segment of the event with warmth and eloquence. His effective coordination added vibrancy and continuity to the proceedings.

The dignitaries reiterated the institution’s unwavering commitment, through IQAC initiatives, to creating a strong synergy between academics, industry exposure, professional training and employability skills. They emphasised that the true measure of quality education extends beyond academic achievement and lies in empowering students to confidently step into the professional world and build rewarding careers.

The interactive session that followed provided students with an opportunity to seek clarification on career pathways, emerging industry trends, internship and industrial training opportunities, placement expectations, aptitude tests, resume preparation, interview techniques and essential skill development.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Rohan Cardoza, Head of the Department, BHS, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, dignitaries, management, IQAC, faculty members, administrative staff and students for their valuable participation and contribution towards making the programme meaningful and successful.

The Placement Orientation Programme thus emerged as a meaningful and motivating platform for career awakening, inspiring BHS and AHM students to look beyond textbooks, embrace continuous learning and prepare themselves to become confident, skilled and globally competent hospitality professionals.

With its focus on technology-driven excellence, professional competence, employability skills and people-first service, the programme reaffirmed Vidyalaxmi Group of Institutions’ vision of nurturing young talent into industry-ready professionals capable of creating memorable experiences and making a meaningful mark in the ever-evolving world of hospitality, aviation and tourism.

Konkani stalwarts in Dolvine Kollalgiri and Joe Quadros bestowed with ‘ ‘Catholic Sabha Konkani Sevashree Puraskar 2026’, as Konkani Manyata Divas Celebrated in Kallianpur.

Kallianpur, August 16, 2026: In a colourful and deeply moving celebration of Konkani language, culture and heritage, the Catholic Sabha Kallianpur Varado observed Konkani Manyata Divas for the first time, honouring two veterans and 18 distinguished Konkani personalities from its nine parishes.
Popular writer JoQa (Joe Quadros) and promising multi-talented musician Dolvine Mendonca were conferred the prestigious Catholic Sabha Konkani Sevashree Awards 2026 for their outstanding and selfless contribution to Konkani language and culture.

As the Konkani world observes Konkani Manyata Divas on August 20 every year, Kallianpur Varado chose to mark the occasion with a grand celebration on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the Milagres Tricentenary Memorial Auditorium, Kallianpur. The gathering began at 3.45 p.m. with refreshments and high tea, creating a warm atmosphere of fellowship.

At exactly 4.10 p.m., Emcee Roshan D’Souza gave the programme a vibrant beginning with a colourful procession of dignitaries. Msgr Francis Xavier Lewis, Vicar General of the Diocese of Udupi and Rector of the Cathedral; Joakim Stany Alvares, President of the Karnataka State Konkani Sahitya Academy; and eminent Konkani all-rounder Eric Soans were led by Catholic Sabha Kallianpur Varado President Joyal D’Almeida, proudly carrying the Konkani flag. They were accompanied by the Deanery office-bearers, Presidents of the nine Catholic Sabha Units and other dignitaries, while the Konkani Anthem was solemnly sung.

The Cathedral choir, led by the prayerful hymn, set a spiritual tone to the celebration. President Joyal D’Almeida extended a traditional and cordial welcome to the guests with God Udak and fresh roses.

In his keynote address, Elias D’Souza, Vice President and Convenor of the celebration, highlighted the profound need and relevance of preserving and honouring one’s mother tongue, while underlining the richness of Konkani language, culture and heritage.

The celebration was formally inaugurated with the traditional lighting of the lamp by Msgr Francis Xavier Lewis, along with the dignitaries on the dais. In his message, he conveyed his greetings on Konkani Manyata Divas, congratulated the organisers and participants, and expressed his happiness at being part of this unique celebration.
18 Unsung Heroes of Konkani Honoured with the title – ‘Catholic Sabha Konkani Seva-Samman Gavrav 2026’
The first major highlight of the programme was the recognition of two achievers from each of the nine parishes. Each awardee was escorted to the stage, while the respective Unit Presidents and Secretaries briefly introduced their achievements and contributions.

The 18 recipients represented the many dimensions of Konkani service—poetry, literature, art, singing, leadership, compering, religious music, social media, drama and other forms of cultural service. Some were veterans who had dedicated a lifetime to Konkani, while others represented the promising younger generation.

Each recipient was honoured with a traditional shawl, bouquet and memento. Steevan Lewis of Brahmavar and Sr Anita of Kallianpur expressed their feelings and gratitude on behalf of the recipients, describing the recognition as a deeply cherished and memorable honour.

CS Kallianpur Deanery Konkani Sevashree Puraskar 2026:
The atmosphere rose to another level when multi-talented young musician Dolvine Mendonca was introduced to the audience by Rosy Baretto. His introduction was greeted with thunderous applause as he was conferred the Catholic Sabha Konkani Sevashree Award 2026 in recognition of his contribution to Konkani music and culture.

Then came a truly emotional moment. As veteran writer Joe Quadros (JoQa) took his place of honour, the entire gathering rose in a standing ovation, acknowledging his decades-long contribution to the Konkani world. Clarence Fernandes (Nanu), Marol Thottam, read the citation highlighting his remarkable service.
Both awardees were honoured with a traditional shawl, peta, garland, fruit basket, memento and purse, as a mark of appreciation for their selfless contribution to Konkani language, heritage and culture.

Both JoQa and Dolvine Mendonca expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Catholic Sabha and the organisers for the distinctive recognition.

‘Speak Konkani at Home and Pass It On’:

Chief Guest Joakim Stany Alvares, in his beautifully worded address, reminded the gathering that the future of Konkani depends on its use in everyday life. He urged everyone to speak Konkani at home, offer prayers in Konkani and pass the rich linguistic and cultural legacy on to the next generation.

He congratulated the veteran Konkani workers of the region and lauded the Catholic Sabha Kallianpur Varado for taking this rare and meaningful initiative.
A prayerful tribute was also offered to the departed legendary singer and composer Henry D’Souza, remembering his valuable contribution to Konkani music.

Guest of Honour Eric Soans added colour to the occasion by singing a few lines of Amar Kavi Wilfy Rebimbus, beautifully highlighting the richness, sweetness and appeal of Konkani. He welcomed the initiative and expressed the hope that such celebrations would continue and become even more meaningful in the years ahead.

A Colourful Finale:

The cultural segment added further sparkle to the two-hour celebration. Traditional Gumta Podan and other Konkani songs presented by young performers were warmly appreciated by the audience, bringing together tradition, talent and youthful enthusiasm.

The colourful two-hour extravaganza—rich in Konkani tradition, art, culture, music and literature—concluded with a vote of thanks by Archibald Furtado, Secretary, Catholic Sabha Kallianpur Varado. He expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, performers, awardees, office-bearers, volunteers and well-wishers who contributed to the success of the historic celebration.

He also made an appeal to generous donors and Konkani lovers to come forward and support the establishment of an Endowment Corpus Fund, which would ensure that this meaningful Konkani Manyata Divas celebration can be continued every year.

The first Konkani Manyata Divas celebration of the Catholic Sabha Kallianpur Varado thus became much more than an event. It was a heartfelt tribute to the mother tongue, a celebration of Konkani identity, a recognition of its silent servants in a humble manner and a promise to carry the language and its rich heritage forward to future generations.
