Making of ‘Wheel Chair’ – A Different Love Story ; Another promising chapter in the journey of Konkani Cinema

— Archibald Furtado

Making of ‘Wheel Chair’ – A Different Love Story ; Another promising chapter in the journey of Konkani Cinema

There are films that entertain us. There are films that make us think. And there are films that touch something deep within us. ‘Wheel Chair’, the upcoming Konkani feature film subtitled ‘A Different Love Story’, promises to be one such cinematic journey.

For me, ‘Wheel Chair’ is more than just another Konkani film. It is a personal and memorable association, as I have the privilege of playing a small but significant role as, the ‘Fr Alfred Hostel Manager’. Having become a part of this ambitious cinematic venture, I feel a special moral responsibility to join hands with the entire team in promoting the film and encouraging our Konkani community to support it. The film is being planned for release around Easter 2027.

The film is an ambitious venture of celebrated Konkani filmmaker one and only ‘Konkani Cine-kala Samrat’ – Harry Fernandes Barkur, who has taken on the story, screenplay, dialogues and direction.
It is produced under the banner of Deepa Creations Film Production by Melwin D’Souza Angelore, Deepak Paladka and Harry Fernandes, Barkur.

For Harry Fernandes Barkur, ‘Wheel Chair’ marks another important milestone in a remarkable cinematic journey. His earlier works —blockbuster ‘Noshibacho Khell’, ‘Sophia – A Love Story’, pure comedy ‘Zaovoi No. 1’ and the much-admired cultural masterpiece ‘Benddkar’ — have established his distinctive identity in Konkani cinema.

With ‘Wheel Chair’, Harry once again ventures into a different narrative space, promising a story that combines love, emotion, human values and a meaningful moral message. At the muhurat ceremony, the director described the film as a fresh narrative that seeks to balance entertainment with a deeper message.

A Coming Together of Coastal Talent:
One of the most exciting aspects of ‘Wheel Chair’ is the coming together of established veterans, experienced artistes and promising young talent.
Veteran artistes such as Stany Alvares, Prince Jacob Deepak Paladka and Aravind Bolar are part of the cast, alongside popular and emerging young faces. The lead pair features handsome Elton Mascarenhas and cute, energetic Salomi Alvares.

Once again, the creative energies of Karnataka and Goa are joining hands for Konkani cinema. This coming together of artistes and technicians from across the coastal Konkani belt and Mumbai reflects the strength, diversity and unity of our language and culture.
It is this spirit of collaboration that gives ‘Wheel Chair’ an identity much larger than a single film.

A Film with a Purpose:
The very title ‘Wheel Chair’ immediately evokes curiosity. The film’s poster — featuring a wheelchair against the backdrop of a church and the beautiful coastal landscape — hints at a story that is different from conventional romantic narratives.
The team has spoken about bringing a fresh storyline to Konkani cinema while retaining entertainment value and a meaningful message. That combination could make ‘Wheel Chair’ an interesting cinematic experience for audiences of all generations.

My Small Role, A Great Responsibility:
For me personally, portraying Fr Alfred, the Hostel Manager, is a small role in terms of screen presence, but a memorable experience in terms of the journey behind it.

Every film is the collective dream of dozens of people — actors, technicians, producers, writers, musicians, cameramen and countless others who work behind the scenes. Once we become part of such a creative family, we naturally share in its hopes and aspirations.
Therefore, I look forward not merely to seeing myself on the screen, but to seeing ‘Wheel Chair’ succeed as a Konkani film.

Let Us Support Our Own Cinema:
Konkani is not merely a language. It is the voice of our homes, our memories, our traditions, our humour, our faith and our coastal identity.
Every Konkani film is therefore an opportunity to celebrate that identity.
The muhurat ceremony itself saw prominent personalities from Konkani cultural and artistic circles come together, with speakers stressing the importance of sustained publicity and community support for regional cinema.

As we look forward to Easter 2027, let us make ‘Wheel Chair’ not just the dream of its producers and artistes, but a collective dream of the Konkani community.
Let us speak about it,
promote it, take our families and friends to the theatre.

And above all, let us support Konkani cinema.
From the veteran to the newcomer, from Karnataka to Goa and beyond from the writer’s imagination to the actor’s performance — many hands and many hearts are coming together to create ‘Wheel Chair – A Different Love Story’.

Under the creative leadership of Harry Fernandes Barkur, the journey has begun.
The wheels are turning.
The story is unfolding.
And Konkani cinema is ready for another memorable ride.
See you at the theatres during Easter in April 2027!
— Archibald Furtado

About KITTALL

Kittall.com, Mangaluru’s pioneering Konkani literary portal, has completed over 15 years of continuous publication since its launch on 5 February 2011. Founded and edited by poet, short-story writer and critic Henry Mendonca, better known as H. M. Pernal, the free online platform was inaugurated by Sahitya Akademi Award-winning poet Melvyn Rodrigues at Sandesha Foundation in the presence of Fr. Valerian Mendonca and other Konkani personalities.

Named after the Konkani word for “spark,” Kittall was created to ignite literary energy, promote quality writing in the Kannada script, and provide a dedicated digital space for short stories, poems, essays, serialized novels, book reviews, interviews and literary news for a global Konkani readership.

Within a short span, the portal established itself as the only complete Konkani literary website of its kind, regularly featuring contributions from both established and emerging writers while bridging the gap between generations.

In 2012, on its first anniversary, Kittall introduced the Leo Rodrigues Family Kittall Youth Award to recognise and encourage young talent. Sponsored by Abu Dhabi-based NRI entrepreneur and Konkani supporter Leo Rodrigues and his family, the award carries a cash prize of ₹25,000 and a citation.

Kittall Prakashan, the publishing arm of the portal, began bringing out quality Konkani books, starting with Pernal’s short-story collection Beeg Ani Bigath and Kateel’s poetry volume Encounter in 2016. So far Kittall Prakashan has published 20 konkani titles.

Sustained by contributions from well-wishers and readers rather than commercial sponsorship, Kittall continues to function as a non-profit literary platform. H. M. Pernal remains its editor while also serving as publisher of Kittall Publications.

The portal has further expanded into video content and multilingual outreach, maintaining its commitment to nurturing new voices and preserving Konkani literary culture in the digital age.

Today, Kittall stands as a significant chapter in the longer history of Konkani periodicals, offering a sustained online home for literature rooted in coastal Karnataka’s Kannada-script tradition.
