Vinchnar Kaaniyo by Vally Vagga Released

A distinguished gathering of writers, poets, and literary enthusiasts witnessed the release of Vinchnar Kaaniyo (Selected Stories), the latest collection by veteran Konkani Writer Vally Vagga, Mysuru (Valerian D’Souza of Nirkan–Vagga, popularly known by his pen name, Vally Vagga). The event was held at the St Aloysius Deemed University’s Sahodaya Auditorium.

Speaking at the function, Melvyn Rodrigues, poet and member of the Executive Council of the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, as well as Convener of the Konkani Advisory Board, praised Vally Vagga’s lifelong contribution to Konkani Language and literature.

“When I began writing in Konkani, Vally Vagga was already active, and even today he continues with remarkable consistency. To us younger writers, he is not only an elder brother but also a unifier — someone who bridges differences among Konkani authors and strengthens relationships. His six decades of dedicated literary service deserve the highest respect.”

Rodrigues further noted that Accuracy, Benevolence and Concise are the ABC of storytelling and these shine through in Vally Vagga’s works.

H. M. Pernal, Sahitya Akademi Award-winning writer, introduced the book. He highlighted that since beginning his literary journey in 1964, Vally Vagga has written extensively in both Konkani and Kannada. Pernal observed that the author’s stories consistently champion marginalized voices and affirm the value of life. He remarked that stories written across three decades — 1966, 1996, and 2026 — stand as testimony to their timeless relevance.

The program began with a welcome address by Mrs. Libera D’Souza, followed by a vote of thanks from the author himself. His son, Loy D’Souza, was present at the occasion. The event was gracefully compered by poet Titus Noronha.

The release of Vinchnar Kaaniyo was celebrated not only as a literary milestone but also as a reaffirmation of Konkani’s enduring spirit and cultural unity.

Raymond D’Cunha Taccode’s Konkani Poetry Collection ‘Chunyaso Phond’ Released

Mangaluru, May 14, 2026: Konkani poetry collection “Chunyaso Phond” authored by senior journalist, “Charoli King” and multilingual writer Raymond D’Cunha Taccode was released with grandeur at the Press Club, Mangaluru, on Wednesday.

The poetry collection, published in Kannada and Devanagari scripts, was unveiled by NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Dsouza.

Speaking after releasing the book, Micheal Dsouza said that the “Micheal Dsouza Vision Konkani” (MDVK) project was started with the vision of encouraging budding writers and nurturing the Konkani mother tongue.

Recalling an emotional incident shared by a senior writer, he said, “A senior writer once told me that he had written many literary works, but none of them were published. He compared it to carrying a baby in the womb for nine months only for it to be stillborn. A writer’s efforts become meaningful only when the book is published and reaches readers successfully.”

He said the project was initiated to support such writers and provide them a platform to bring their literary works before society. He also appreciated Raymond D’Cunha Taccode for his immense contribution towards Konkani language, literature and culture, and lauded his achievements in journalism and writing.

Guest of honour Henry Mendonca said that Micheal Dsouza has become a great asset to Konkani literature through his support to writers and literary projects.

“Along with Chunyaso Phond, a total of 46 books have now been published under the MDVK project. Within the next five years, our mission of publishing 100 books under this initiative will be fulfilled,” he said.

He also invited aspiring writers to submit their final PDF copies to vissionkonkani@gmail.com or submit hard copies at the Rahul Advertisers office for consideration under the project. “This is a valuable opportunity for every Konkani writer,” he added.

Presiding over the programme, DK Working Journalist Association President,  Pushparaj B.N. said, “Doing good without expecting anything in return is the true example set by Micheal Dsouza. A man may die, but literature never dies. Raymond D’Cunha has ensured that through his literary contributions.”

He further said, “The richest language in the world is silence. Literature and art possess the power to touch the human mind beyond the boundaries of language. In that path, Micheal Dsouza is carrying out remarkable work.”

Welcoming the gathering, Raymond D’Cunha Taccode said, “Providing sponsorship alone is not a great thing; ensuring that the support is used for the right purpose is more important. Even in my 60s, I have continued writing because of the encouragement and motivation from people around me.”

He also announced that the book, published in Kannada and Devanagari scripts, would soon be released in Goa as well.

During the programme, Micheal Dsouza was honoured by the dignitaries present on the dais.

Melvyn Rodrigues, Titus Noronha Committee members of MDVK and D K Working Journalists Association general secretary Rajesh Poojary were present on the occasion.

Senior journalist Bhaskar Rai Katta compered the programme, while Riana D’Cunha proposed the vote of thanks.

Four Discalced Carmelites Ordained Priests at Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte

Four Discalced Carmelite deacons were ordained to the priesthood on May 14 at the Infant Jesus Shrine by Peter Paul Saldanha.

The newly ordained priests are Rev. Fr. Alwyn D’Souza, Rev. Fr. Loy Jackson Crasta, Rev. Fr. Elston Monteiro, and Rev. Fr. Hilary Rodrigues.

In his homily, Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha reminded the newly ordained priests that priesthood is a call to imitate Jesus Christ, the Lamb who sacrificed Himself for the salvation of humanity. He emphasized that a priest is called not only to be a minister but also “priest and victim,” offering his life sacrificially in service of God’s people.

Citing the example of Padre Pio, the Bishop stressed that a priest must remain close to the people entrusted to him. Quoting the saint, he said: “For you I am a priest; with you I am a brother.” He further noted that the priest stands as a victim at the altar in self-offering and as a compassionate judge in the confessional, ministering with mercy, humility, and zeal for souls.

Addressing the newly ordained Carmelite priests, the Bishop invited them to imbibe the spirit of Prophet Elijah, the inspiration of the Carmelite Order, who zealously proclaimed: “I am filled with zeal for the glory of God.”

The Bishop also appreciated the Discalced Carmelites for their dedicated service to the Diocese and the wider Church, particularly commending their innovative and creative approaches in evangelization and their pioneering use of modern means to reach people spiritually.

Rev. Fr. Alwyn D’Souza hails from St Thomas Church and is the son of Anthony D’Souza and Alice D’Souza. He has an elder brother.

Rev. Fr. Elston Monteiro belongs to Holy Cross Church and is the son of Elias and Lilly Monteiro. He is the youngest among three sons.

Rev. Fr. Loy Jackson Crasta, belonging to Infant Mary Church, is the first priest from the parish. He is the youngest son of Marcel and Lucy Crasta.

Rev. Fr. Hilary Rodrigues hails from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Church in the Diocese of Karwar. He is the son of the late Bodthol Rodrigues and Rosy Rodrigues and the youngest among two sons.

The solemn ordination ceremony was attended by around 130 priests, religious sisters, family members, and faithful from various places.

Rev. Fr. John Francis Sequeira, the newly elected Provincial Superior of the Karnataka-Goa Province of the Discalced Carmelites, thanked the Bishop for ordaining the new priests and expressed gratitude to the parents for generously offering their sons in service to the Church through the Carmelite Order.

Meanwhile, two other Carmelite deacons were ordained in their native parishes. Rev. Fr. Ruban K.V. was ordained on May 10 by Henry D’Souza in his hometown parish. Fr. Ruban, son of the late Varghese K.A. and Arpuda Mary from Siddapur, completed his theological studies at Teresianum, Rome, and will return to Rome for pastoral ministry.

On May 11, Bishop Henry D’Souza ordained Rev. Fr. Stin George in his native parish at Suntikoppa in the Diocese of Mysuru. Fr. Stin is the son of Robert M.G. and the late Josephine Rodrigues and the youngest among two children.

A felicitation programme followed the ordination ceremony, during which the newly ordained priests, along with their parents and families, were honoured and congratulated.

The programme was compered by Rev. Fr. Pritesh Crasta, while Rev. Fr. Stifan Perera, Director of the Infant Jesus Shrine, proposed the vote of thanks. Among those present were Rev. Fr. Joseph Silvestre D’Souza, former Provincial Superior; Rev. Fr. Rajesh Rosario, Rector of St Joseph’s Seminary; Rev. Fr. Naveen Pinto, Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Mangalore; and the parish priests of the newly ordained priests.
