Mount Rosary Millennium Auditorium, Santhekatte – Kallianpur, wore a festive and harmonious look as it hosted a meaningful Inter-Religious Christmas Celebration – 2025, popularly known as Sauharda Koota, on the evening of 18th December 2025. The programme stood as a glowing testimony to unity, peace and mutual respect among communities.

The programme commenced with a solemn prayer hymn rendered by the Mount Rosary Church Choir, led by Mrs. Jovita Fernandes, invoking God’s blessings on the gathering. This was followed by a graceful welcome dance presented by the talented children of Mount Rosary English Medium High School, which set a joyful and vibrant tone for the evening.

Mrs. Priya Furtado, Secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mount Rosary Church, efficiently compered the programme and guided the audience smoothly through the evening’s events.

The celebration was presided over by Rev. Dr. Roque D’Souza, Parish Priest of Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte – Kallianpur. In his presidential address, he expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all those involved in organising the programme and warmly thanked all invitees and distinguished guests for gracing the occasion. He appreciated the spirit of harmony reflected through the celebration and wished everyone a meaningful Christmas.

The Chief Guest, Mr. S. M. Irshad, Nejar, was formally introduced by Mr. Archibald Furtado, the President of the Catholic Sabha. In his address, Mr. Irshad, the President of Muslim Okkuta, Udupi Taluk, highlighted that all religions teach harmony, peaceful coexistence and the principle of “live and let live.” He remarked that India, being the cradle of universal brotherhood, has always upheld these values, as propagated by Lord Rama, Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad. He lauded such inter-religious gatherings for strengthening communal harmony.

Mr. Prakash Poojary, Administrator of Pakkibettu Garodi, was introduced by Mr. Valerian Fernandes, Coordinator of the 20 Commissions of the parish. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Poojary shared that the region has always been known for unity, fraternity and peaceful coexistence. He noted that celebrations like Christmas further strengthen social bonds and expressed optimism that such harmony would continue to flourish.

Rev. Fr. Rohan Muscarenhas, Assistant Parish Priest of Mount Rosary Church, was introduced by Mr. Luke D’Souza, Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council. In his insightful message, Fr. Rohan gave a clarion call to imbibe three important virtues: love, peace within oneself and within the community, and sharing with the less privileged. He conveyed his heartfelt Christmas greetings to all present.

A special and proud moment of the evening was the felicitation of Mr. Vittal Poojary, recipient of the Udupi District Rajyotsav Award – 2025. The honour was introduced by Mr. Baptist Dias, Panchayat Member. Mr. Vittal Poojary was felicitated with a traditional shawl, garland, fruit basket and memento in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the progress of Moodubettu. As a dedicated Panchayat member for five consecutive terms, he has served society selflessly, cutting across caste, creed and religion, and has played a pivotal role in ensuring road connectivity to every household in the region.

The cultural segment added colour and deeper meaning to the celebration. A beautiful and energetic welcome dance by the enthusiastic members of Stree Sanghatan, Mount Rosary, won warm applause from the audience. This was followed by a thought-provoking skit carrying a strong Christmas message, presented by the Catholic Sabha members. The festive spirit reached its peak with joyful carol singing accompanied by Santa Claus, led by the enthusiastic ICYM and YCS youth, spreading cheer among young and old alike.

The inaugural ceremony was marked by the cutting of the Christmas cake, which was joyfully distributed along with soft drinks to all present. Adding a traditional touch, homemade Kuswar packets were thoughtfully arranged for all guests to carry home, reflecting the warmth and sharing spirit of Christmas.

The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Peter Lewis, Convenor of the Commission for Inter-Religious Harmony and Understanding, who gratefully acknowledged the cooperation and support of all organisers, participants and guests.

Christmas – A Call to Truth, Transparency, and Ethical Living

Dear friends, warm greetings to all of you.

On this sacred occasion of the Christmas feast, we gratefully remember the eternal message of love, peace, and humanity that Jesus Christ brought into this world. This feast offers us a unique opportunity to reaffirm the values of truth, justice, and harmonious coexistence in society.

In our society, challenges such as violence, deceit, misinformation, and mutual distrust are steadily increasing. The erosion of truth, justice, and harmony in public sphere has become a matter of serious concern for the future of our nation. Fundamental rights such as personal privacy, a life of dignity, and religious freedom seem to be increasingly under threat. Divisions based on caste, religion, community, and social status are growing stronger. It is heartbreaking to hear, day after day, of countless innocent people falling victim to the hands of fraudsters.

In this context, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ presents a special call to every citizen of society and to every institution. It is a call to foster mutual respect; a call to safeguard the dignity of every person; a call to eradicate falsehood, injustice, and corruption; a call to choose the path of peace and dialogue instead of violence; and a call to strengthen the unity of society.

Safeguarding truth, transparency, and ethical values is not merely a legal obligation; it is also a fundamental pillar of the society’s future. Whether ordinary citizens, elected representatives, governments, or administrative institutions, all must cultivate integrity in personal and public life, transparency in governance, justice in decision-making, and people-centered accountability in implementation. Along with protecting the fundamental and constitutional rights of citizens, efforts must be made to strengthen fraternity among all. For society to progress peacefully and for the nation to move along the path of genuine development, upholding ethics, transparency, and truth is the foremost duty of every institution and every citizen. In order that development reaches everyone in all its dimensions, it is essential to treat all citizens with respect and dignity.

Therefore, it is my earnest hope that the Christmas feast of the Jubilee Year 2025 will bring peace to our nation, harmony to our society, ethical renewal to public life, and a new ray of hope to the life of every citizen. May the light of love, truth, and peace shine not only in our hearts and homes, but also in public systems, all kinds of institutions, and the decisions of our nation. Light dispels darkness, love conquers hatred, and peace drives away fear – May this truth be ours.

I extend the joyful greetings of Christmas and New Year to all the people of the land and invoke God’s blessings upon you all.

+ Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop, Diocese of Mangalore, 23 December 2025

Christmas Harmony Meet at St. Francis Assisi Church, Tallur

On Sunday, 21/12/2025 at 9.00 a.m., a Christmas Harmony Meet was held at the Tallur Church Hall jointly organized by the Catholic Sabha Udupi Region – Tallur Unit and the Interfaith Commission.

The programme was presided over by Rev. Fr. Edwin D’Souza, the parish priest.

The chief guests were Mr. Bhaskar Kogga Kamath, President, Uppinakudru Sri Devanna Padmanabha Kamath Memorial Yakshagana Gombeyata Trust;

Mr. Yakub Khader Gulwadi, writer and film director; and

Mr. Vinod Crasto, President, Kundapura Urban Development Authority, Government of Karnataka.

Mr. Bhaskar Kogga Kamath, in his address, said that harmony means the privilege of sitting together with the parish priest. Though he considers himself an ordinary artist, he has visited many churches and experienced great hospitality from Christians during his travels. This, he said, is true harmony. Harmony should be practiced, not merely spoken about. It is not an individual achievement but a legacy handed down through tradition. Through the values of determination, dedication, and discipline embedded in the guru–shishya tradition, he experienced harmony across the world. Christmas symbolizes the light of harmony. Light represents knowledge and never moves downward. Understanding this philosophy gives deeper meaning to harmony. In today’s world, where relationships are weakening, such values should be nurtured by teachers and guides. He conveyed Christmas greetings to all.

Mr. Yakub Khader Gulwadi stated that Christmas is a festival of love, peace, and coexistence, which the world needs today. Jesus Christ taught peace and compassion. Christmas teaches sharing. Harmony should be reflected in our actions, not just words. Helping those in need is true harmony. Only when humanity rises above caste and religion does Christmas find its true meaning. Like a star that removes darkness, Christmas love should eliminate divisions among us. He wished everyone a happy Christmas.

Mr. Vinod Crasto said that while basic facilities exist in the country, patience is lacking. If patience prevails, our communities will flourish. Good relationships with neighbours are essential. Only by supporting each other in difficult times does Christmas gain true meaning. Harmony should become part of our daily life, and he wished that its light spreads further in society.

In his presidential address, Rev. Fr. Edwin D’Souza said that Jesus was born under the light of a star, and hence Christianity always walks humbly, focusing on service to the poor and marginalized. Christians are known for helping the poor. Jesus was born in a manger and taught us to see God in the poor and the downtrodden. As 2025 marks the Jubilee year since the birth of Jesus Christ, the entire Church is celebrating it. He also informed that the Bishop has declared 2026 as the Year of the Poor.Parish priest honoured and felicitated  all the chief guests.

Vice president and secretary of parish councils, commission coordinator, religious sisters, and members of the Catholic Sabha and Interfaith Commission were present.

Mr. Anil D’Silva, President of the Catholic Sabha Tallur Unit, welcomed the gathering. Secretary Mr. Gravin Pasanna proposed the vote of thanks. The programme coordinators Mrs. Jamma Fernandes, Mrs. Juliana Mendonca, and Mr. Arun Mendonca introduced the guests.Mrs.Judith Mendonca  compered the program.
