Special Lecture on “Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for a Sustainable Future: Opportunities, Challenges, and Social Impact”
ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ; ಆಸ್ಟ್ರೇಲಿಯಾದ ಮೆಲ್ಬೋರ್ನ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಸಮನ್ ಹಲ್ಗಮುಗೆ ಅವರು, 2026ರ ಸೆಪ್ಟೆಂಬರ್ 25 ರಂದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸೇಂಟ್ ಜೋಸೆಫ್ಸ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ “ಸುಸ್ಥಿರ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯುತ ಕೃತಕ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮತ್ತೆ (AI): ಅವಕಾಶಗಳು, ಸವಾಲುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪ್ರಭಾವ” ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯದ ಕುರಿತು ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸ ನೀಡಿದರು.
ಈ ವಿಶೇಷ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸಕ್ಕೂ ಮುನ್ನ, ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಸಮನ್ ಹಲ್ಗಮುಗೆ ಅವರು ಸೇಂಟ್ ಜೋಸೆಫ್ಸ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಬೋಧಕವರ್ಗದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂವಾದ ನಡೆಸಿದರು. ಈ ಸಂವಾದವು ಬೋಧಕರಿಗೆ ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಚರ್ಚಿಸಲು ಹಾಗೂ ಕೃತಕ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮತ್ತೆ (AI), ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ, ಉದಯೋನ್ಮುಖ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಗಳ ಕುರಿತು ವಿಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ವಿನಿಮಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿತು.
ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವು ಎಂಸಿಎ (MCA) ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಪ್ರಜ್ವಲ್ ಅವರ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಶುಭಾರಂಭಗೊಂಡಿತು. ನಂತರ ದೀಪ ಬೆಳಗುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಗಣ್ಯರು, ಸಂಪನ್ಮೂಲ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ, ಬೋಧಕವರ್ಗ ಮತ್ತು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳನ್ನು ಆತ್ಮೀಯವಾಗಿ ಸ್ವಾಗತಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ ಮುಂದುವರೆಯಿತು.
ಸೇಂಟ್ ಜೋಸೆಫ್ಸ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಐಇಇಇ (IEEE) ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿಯ ಫ್ಯಾಕಲ್ಟಿ ಸಲಹೆಗಾರರಾದ ಡಾ. ದೀಪಾ ನಾಗಲವಿ ಅವರು ಸಂಪನ್ಮೂಲ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಸಮನ್ ಹಲ್ಗಮುಗೆ ಅವರನ್ನು ಸಭೆಗೆ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರು ಅತಿಥಿ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸಕರ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ, ವೃತ್ತಿಪರ ಸಾಧನೆಗಳು, ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಕೊಡುಗೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಣತಿಯ ಕುರಿತು ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತ ವಿವರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದರು. ಉದ್ಘಾಟನಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿ ಸಂಪನ್ಮೂಲ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಸನ್ಮಾನಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.
ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಸಮನ್ ಹಲ್ಗಮುಗೆ ಅವರು “ಸುಸ್ಥಿರ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯುತ ಕೃತಕ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮತ್ತೆ (AI): ಅವಕಾಶಗಳು, ಸವಾಲುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪ್ರಭಾವ” ಕುರಿತು ವಿಶೇಷ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಈ ಅಧಿವೇಶನವು ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯುತ ಕೃತಕ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮತ್ತೆಯ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಿರುವ ಮಹತ್ವದ ಮೇಲೆ ಗಮನಹರಿಸಿತು ಮತ್ತು AIಯ ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರ ಪ್ರಗತಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಅವಕಾಶಗಳು, ಸವಾಲುಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ತೋರಿಸಿತು. AIಯ ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯಗಳಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ, ಅದರ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯುತ ಬಳಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಸ್ಥಿರ ಭವಿಷ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಅದರ ಕೊಡುಗೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಯೋಚಿಸಲು ಈ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸವು ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದವರನ್ನು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸಿತು.
ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸದ ನಂತರ ಸಂವಾದಾತ್ಮಕ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೋತ್ತರ ಅಧಿವೇಶನ ನಡೆಯಿತು; ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಬೋಧಕವರ್ಗದವರು ಸಂಪನ್ಮೂಲ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂವಹನ ನಡೆಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟನೆ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಅವಕಾಶವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದರು.
ಸಂವಾದದ ನಂತರ, ಐಇಇಇ (IEEE) ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿಯ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ವಿಭಾಗದ (Student Branch) ನೂತನ ಪದಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಬ್ಯಾಡ್ಜ್ಗಳನ್ನು ವಿತರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಬ್ಯಾಡ್ಜ್ ವಿತರಣೆಯು ನೂತನ ಪದಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಗೂ ಸೊಸೈಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಪಾತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಅಧಿಕೃತವಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸಿತು. ನಂತರ ಪಿಆರ್ ಇಂಟರ್ನ್ಗಳಿಗೆ ಬ್ಯಾಡ್ಜ್ಗಳನ್ನು ವಿತರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯು ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಐಇಇಇ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಬಂಧಿತ ಉಪಕ್ರಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಿ ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸಿತು.
ಐಇಇಇ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಅಮೃತಾ ಅವರು ಧನ್ಯವಾದ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವುದರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವು ಮುಕ್ತಾಯಗೊಂಡಿತು. ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಒಳನೋಟಗಳನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅವರು ಪ್ರೊ. ಸಮನ್ ಹಲ್ಗಮುಗೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆಯನ್ನು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದರು. ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ನಾಯಕತ್ವ, ಐಇಇಇ ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿ, ಅಂತರರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ವ್ಯವಹಾರಗಳ ಕಚೇರಿ, ಮಾಹಿತಿ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಶಾಲೆ, ಅಧ್ಯಾಪಕ ಸದಸ್ಯರು, ಸಂಘಟನಾ ತಂಡ, ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದ ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಗೆ ಕೊಡುಗೆ ನೀಡಿದ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಅವರು ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದರು.
ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸವು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅಧ್ಯಾಪಕ ಸದಸ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯುತ ಎಐ, ಸುಸ್ಥಿರತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಉದಯೋನ್ಮುಖ ಎಐ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಗಳ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಪ್ರಭಾವದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಒಳನೋಟಗಳನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಒಂದು ಅಮೂಲ್ಯವಾದ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ವೇದಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸಿತು. ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವು ಕೃತಕ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮತ್ತೆಯ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯುತ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅನ್ವಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಜಾಗೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುವವರು ಸಮಾಜ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಸರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅದರ ವಿಶಾಲ ಪ್ರಭಾವವನ್ನು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸಿತು.

Bengaluru ; Prof. Saman Halgamuge from University of Melbourne, Australia delivered a talk on “Responsible AI for a Sustainable Future: Opportunities, Challenges and Societal Impact.” At St Joseph’s University, Bengaluru on 25th Sept, 2026.
Prior to the Distinguished Lecture, Prof. Saman Halgamuge had an interaction with the faculty members of St. Joseph’s University. The interaction provided an opportunity for faculty members to engage with him and exchange ideas on Artificial Intelligence, research, emerging technologies, and potential academic.
The programme commenced with a prayer sung by Prajwal, an MCA student, marking an auspicious beginning to the event. This was followed by the lighting of the lamp and a warm welcome to the dignitaries, resource person, faculty members, and students.
The resource person, Prof. Saman Halgamuge, University of Melbourne, Australia, was formally introduced by Dr. Deepa Nagalavi, IEEE Computer Society Faculty Advisor, St. Joseph’s University. She presented a brief overview of the distinguished speaker’s academic background, professional accomplishments, research contributions, and expertise. The resource person was also felicitated as part of the inaugural programme.
Prof. Saman Halgamuge delivered the Distinguished Lecture on “Responsible AI for a Sustainable Future: Opportunities, Challenges and Societal Impact.” The session focused on the growing importance of Responsible Artificial Intelligence and highlighted the opportunities, challenges, and societal implications associated with the rapid advancement of AI. The lecture encouraged participants to consider not only the technological capabilities of AI but also its responsible use and contribution towards a sustainable future.
The lecture was followed by an interactive Question and Answer session, during which students and faculty members had an opportunity to interact with the resource person and clarify their queries.
Following the interaction session, the badges were distributed to the newly appointed office bearers of the IEEE Computer Society Student Branch. The badge distribution formally recognized the new office bearers and their roles and responsibilities within the society. Followed by the distribution of badges to PR Interns. The activity recognized and encouraged students actively involved in IEEE Computer Society and related initiatives at the University.
The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Amritha, IEEE Computer Society Chair. She expressed sincere gratitude to Prof. Saman Halgamuge for sharing his valuable knowledge and insights with the participants. She also thanked the University leadership, IEEE Computer Society, Office for International Affairs, School of Information Technology, faculty members, organizing team, students, and everyone who contributed to the successful conduct of the programme.
The Distinguished Lecture provided a valuable academic platform for students and faculty members to gain insights into Responsible AI, sustainability, and the societal impact of emerging AI technologies. The programme enhanced awareness about the responsible development and application of Artificial Intelligence and encouraged participants to consider its broader impact on society and the environment.
