Bengaluru: Seminar at St Joseph’s University highlights ‘forgotten’ Christian role in nation-building

BENGALURU: Christians from South India shaped India’s freedom struggle and contributed to the framing of the Constitution, but their role has largely faded from public memory, speakers said at a national seminar held at St Joseph’s University on Saturday.
The Centre for Religion and Culture (CRC), St Joseph’s University, organised a one-day national seminar on “Christian Voices in the Making of the Nation: Forgotten Histories from South India” on Oct 17.
Inaugurating the seminar, Most Rev Dr Arokia Raj Satis Kumar, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Bangalore, said Christian educational and social institutions had helped lay the foundations of the nation.
Prof S. Japhet, Chairman, Karnataka Christian Community Development Corporation and former Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore Central University and Bengaluru City University, urged scholars to look beyond institutions to community histories. He traced Christianity’s imprint across Malenadu, Mangaluru, Kalyana Karnataka, Bengaluru and Kolar.
Delivering the keynote address, Amb Pascal Alan Nazareth, former diplomat and Gandhian scholar, recalled Christians who joined the freedom movement, including Fr Jerome D’Souza SJ, member of the Constituent Assembly, and Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, who worked alongside Mahatma Gandhi.
Welcoming the gathering, CRC Director Dr (Fr) Bala Kiran Kumar Hrudayaraj SJ quoted Milan Kundera: “The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting.”
The first plenary session, moderated by Prof Cheriyan Alexander, discussed political choices in the pre-Independence era. Dr (Fr) Jose Kalapura SJ, Dr Joshy Mathew and Dr Denis Fernandes noted that Christians were divided over communal electorates, while some participated in the Dandi March and the Vaikom Satyagraha and went to jail. Adv Flavia Agnes traced the journey of George Fernandes from Mangaluru trade union activism to national leadership during the Emergency.
The second plenary focused on caste and identity within the Church. Prof D. Manohar Chandra Prasad discussed the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission recommendation to extend Scheduled Caste status to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims, and referred to the Kandhamal violence. Dr Ruth Manorama described conversion as a “political act” and said Dalit women bear a “triple burden,” calling for reform of caste and patriarchal practices within churches. Prof Babu Mathew spoke on the rise of authoritarianism in the name of nationalism. Moderator Jerrin Chandan recalled Dr B R Ambedkar’s warning about India’s “life of contradictions”.
In the valedictory address, cultural critic Prof N Manu Chakravarthy drew on the Gospel of Matthew and the life of Ivan Illich to argue that the capacity to accept critique lies at the heart of democracy.
Dr Jane D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks.
