MIO honours BPL families during Ayudha Puja for ₹35-crore cancer equipment

Mangaluru, October 17: In a departure from tradition, two Below Poverty Line (BPL) families performed Ayudha Puja at Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO), symbolically placing patients at the heart of its cancer care mission.
The ceremony was held to mark the installation of a ₹25-crore TrueBeam radiotherapy system and a ₹10-crore PET-CT scanner, representing a total investment of ₹35 crore in advanced cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Instead of hospital owners, directors or senior doctors performing the rituals, MIO invited two economically disadvantaged families to represent the institution. The initiative was led by Dr Suresh Rao, director of clinical and administration at MIO.
Dr Rao believes that a patient’s dignity should not be determined by economic status and that financial constraints should not prevent anyone from accessing quality cancer treatment.
Traditionally, Ayudha Puja is performed to seek blessings for tools and equipment. At MIO, the ceremony was dedicated to sophisticated medical technology intended to save lives, alleviate suffering and offer hope to cancer patients.
The families represented by Rashmi and Pradeep Kumar, and Savitha and Laxman Goud, participated in the ceremony, underscoring the hospital’s commitment to treating patients with equal respect and dignity, irrespective of their financial background.
MIO said the initiative reaffirmed its commitment to making advanced and compassionate cancer care accessible to both rural and urban communities.
