ಅ।ವಂ। ಫಾದರ್ (ಡಾ.) ಲೆಸ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಲಿಫರ್ಡ್ ಡಿಸೋಜಾ ಅವರು ಆಗಸ್ಟ್ 19, 1962 ರಂದು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಉಡುಪಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಉಚ್ಚಿಲ (ಯೆರ್ಮಾಲ್) ನಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಾರೆನ್ಸ್ ಡಿಸೋಜಾ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ ಸಿಸೆಲಿಯಾ ಡಿಸೋಜಾ ದಂಪತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರು ಆಳವಾಗಿ ಬೇರೂರಿರುವ ಕ್ರಿಶ್ಚಿಯನ್ ಕುಟುಂಬದಿಂದ ಬಂದವರು ಮತ್ತು ಎಂಟು ಸಹೋದರರ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕುಟುಂಬವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ, ಅವರ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳು ಅವರ ವೃತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪ್ರಭಾವಿಸಿದವು. ಅವರ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಹಿರಿಯ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರಾದ ದಿವಂಗತ ವೆರೋನಿಕಾ ಡಿ’ಸೋಜಾ ಮತ್ತು ದಿವಂಗತ ಕ್ರಿಸ್ಟೀನ್ ಡಿ’ಸೋಜಾ ಅವರನ್ನು ಶಾಶ್ವತ ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿಗೆ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಅವರ ಇತರ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರು ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಅವರನ್ನು ಬೆಂಬಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಅವರ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವು ಉಚ್ಚಿಲದ ಸರಸ್ವತಿ ಮಂದಿರ ಹೈಯರ್ ಪ್ರೈಮರಿ ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ (1969–1976) ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಯಿತು, ನಂತರ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಮೀನುಗಾರಿಕಾ ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲೆ, ಯೆರ್ಮಾಲ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ (1976–1979) ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲಾ ಅಧ್ಯಯನವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರು ಅಡಮಾರ್‌ನ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ (1979–1981) ತಮ್ಮ ಪೂರ್ವ-ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸಿದರು.

ದೇವರ ಕರೆಗೆ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸಿದ ಫಾದರ್ ಲೆಸ್ಲಿ ಪುರೋಹಿತಶಾಹಿ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಉನ್ನತ ಅಧ್ಯಯನವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರು ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಸೇಂಟ್ ಜೋಸೆಫ್ಸ್ ಇಂಟರ್-ಡಯೋಸಿಸನ್ ಸೆಮಿನರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ (1982–1985) ತಮ್ಮ ತಾತ್ವಿಕ ಅಧ್ಯಯನವನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸುವಾಗ ಮೈಸೂರು ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಿಂದ ಕಲಾ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದರು. ನಂತರ ಅವರು ರೋಮ್‌ನ ಪಾಂಟಿಫಿಕಲ್ ಉರ್ಬಾನಿಯಾ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಿಂದ ದೇವತಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದರು (1986–1990). ಅವರ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಪ್ರಯಾಣವು ಮೈಸೂರು ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಿಂದ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂ.ಎ. ಪದವಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ (1991–1993) ಮುಂದುವರೆಯಿತು, ನಂತರ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಇನ್‌ಸ್ಟಿಟ್ಯೂಟ್ ಫಾರ್ ಸೈಕಾಲಜಿ ಅಂಡ್ ಫಾರ್ಮೇಶನ್‌ನಿಂದ (1993–1995) ಆಳ ಮನೋವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಫಾರ್ಮೇಶನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಡಿಪ್ಲೊಮಾ ಪಡೆದರು. ಅವರು ದೇವತಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪರವಾನಗಿ (1997–1999) ಮತ್ತು ನಂತರ ಬೆಲ್ಜಿಯಂನ ಕ್ಯಾಥೋಲಿಕ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಲ್ಯೂವೆನ್‌ನಿಂದ ನೈತಿಕ ದೇವತಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಡಾಕ್ಟರೇಟ್ (1999–2003) ಪಡೆದರು.

ಫಾದರ್ ಲೆಸ್ಲಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಮೇ 10, 1990 ರಂದು ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಡಯಾಸಿಸ್‌ಗೆ ಪಾದ್ರಿಯಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಅವರು ಪ್ರಥಮವಾಗಿ ಕುಂದಾಪುರದ ಹೋಲಿ ರೋಸರಿ ಚರ್ಚ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ (1990–1992) ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಾಯಕ ಗುರುಗಳಾಗಿ ನೇಮಕಗೊಂಡರು. ನಂತರ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಕುಲಶೇಖರದ ಹೋಲಿ ಕ್ರಾಸ್ ಚರ್ಚ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ (1992–1995) ಸಹಾಯಕ ಗುರುಗಳಾಗಿ ಅವರ ಪುರೋಹಿತ ಸೇವೆ ಮುಂದುವರೆಸಿದರು. ನಂತರ ಅವರು ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸೇಂಟ್ ಜೋಸೆಫ್ಸ್ ಇಂಟರ್-ಡಯೋಸಿಸನ್ ಸೆಮಿನರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ (1995–1997) ನೈತಿಕ ದೇವತಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವರೂಪ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿಯೂ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು 2013 ರವರೆಗೆ ಸಂದರ್ಶಕ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ಮುಂದುವರೆದರು.

ಪಾಂಗ್ಳ/ಶಂಕರ್‌ಪುರದ ಸೇಂಟ್ ಜಾನ್ ದಿ ಇವಾಂಜೆಲಿಸ್ಟ್ ಚರ್ಚ್‌ನ ಧರ್ಮಗುರುಗಳಾಗಿ (2010–2017) ಮತ್ತು ನಂತರ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಪುರ-ಸಂತೆಕಟ್ಟೆಯ ಮೌಂಟ್ ರೋಸರಿ ಚರ್ಚ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ (2017–2022) ಅವರ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಯಜಕತ್ವ ನಾಯಕತ್ವವು ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿತ್ತು, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳ ವರದಿಗಾರರಾಗಿಯೂ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು.

Udupi, 31 January 2026: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Rev. Dr Leslie Clifford D’Souza as the new Bishop of Udupi. He is currently the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva. This appointment was made public in Rome on Saturday, 31 January 2026, at 12:00 noon, corresponding to 04:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time, and was simultaneously announced at Our Lady of Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur, Udupi.
V. Rev. Fr. (Dr) Leslie Clifford D’Souza was born on 19 August 1962 at Uchila (Yermal), Udupi District, Karnataka, to Mr Lawrence D’Souza and Mrs Cecelia D’Souza. He hails from a deeply rooted Christian family and is blessed with a large family of eight siblings, whose faith and values greatly influenced his vocation. Two of his elder sisters, Late Veronica D’Souza and Late Christine D’Souza, have been called to eternal rest, while his other siblings continue to support him through their prayers.
His early education began at Saraswathi Mandir Higher Primary School, Uchila (1969–1976), followed by high school studies at Government Fisheries High School, Yermal (1976–1979). He completed his Pre-University education at Poorna Prajna College, Adamar (1979–1981).
Responding to God’s call, Fr. Leslie pursued higher studies alongside priestly formation. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Mysore while completing his philosophical studies at St Joseph’s Inter-Diocesan Seminary, Mangalore (1982–1985). He then went on to earn a Bachelor in Theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome (1986–1990). His academic journey continued with an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Mysore (1991–1993), followed by a Diploma in Depth Psychology and Formation from the Institute for Psychology and Formation, Bangalore (1993–1995). He further specialized with a Licentiate in Theology (1997–1999) and later a Doctorate in Moral Theology (1999–2003) from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
Fr. Leslie was ordained a priest on 10 May 1990 for the Diocese of Mangalore. His priestly ministry began as Assistant Parish Priest at Holy Rosary Church, Kundapur (1990–1992) and later at Holy Cross Church, Kulshekar, Mangalore (1992–1995). He also served as Professor of Moral Theology and Formator at St Joseph’s Inter-Diocesan Seminary, Mangalore (1995–1997) and continued as a visiting professor until 2013.
His pastoral leadership was evident during his tenure as Parish Priest of St John the Evangelist Church, Pangla/Shankarpura (2010–2017) and later at Mount Rosary Church, Kallianpur-Santhekatte (2017–2022), where he also served as Correspondent of educational institutions.
Since June 2022, Fr. Leslie has been serving as the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva, and as the Correspondent of Don Bosco and St Mary’s Educational Institutions. Alongside his parish ministry, he has contributed significantly to diocesan administration and governance. He was the Secretary of the Council of Priests (2022–2025) and continues to serve as Vicar Forane of the Shirva Deanery, Advocate of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of the Diocese of Udupi, and Member of the College of Consultors (2023–present).
