Udupi; A graceful and meaningful literary event unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, 22nd July 2025, at Anugraha, Udupi, marking the release of the much-awaited Konkani novel ‘Mog Ani Balidan’ (Love and Sacrifice) penned by the acclaimed writer and retired professor Dr. Eugene D’Souza, Moodubelle.
The book was formally released by Rt. Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Diocese. In his inspiring address, the Bishop fondly recalled Dr. Eugene D’Souza’s monumental contribution in compiling the History of the Udupi Diocese – documenting its formative ten years and the evolution of its parishes. He lauded the author’s dedication, discipline, and scholarly depth, as well as his continued commitment to Konkani literature, education, and journalism.
About the Book and the Author:
Dr. Eugene D’Souza, a respected name in Konkani literary circles and a former Professor of History at VPM Arts and Commerce College, Thane-Mumbai, brings alive in ‘Mog Ani Balidan’ a powerful narrative of love, sacrifice, and human values, set against the backdrop of the Indo-China and Indo-Pak wars, nearly five decades ago.
Interestingly, many of the author’s short stories, plays, and novels, written four to five decades ago, are now seeing the light of day in book form thanks to the encouragement from ‘Vision Konkani’, particularly through the initiative of Mr. H. M. Pernal, editor of the renowned Konkani monthly ‘Arso’.
A Collaborative Literary Celebration:
The event was jointly organised by the Diocesan Commission for Social Communication, led by its Diocesan Convenor Rev. Fr. Denis D’Sa, who in his warm welcome address highlighted the contributions of:
Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo – President of the glittering function, Mr. Michael D’Souza, Founder of Vision Konkani – Chief Guest of the event, Dr. Eugene D’Souza – Author of the novel, Engineer Elias D’Souza, Convenor of Bellevision.com – Co-sponsor of the event, Several other distinguished guests and priests who graced the occasion.
Mr. Elias D’Souza, a familiar name in social and literary circles in Belle and Kallianpur, florally welcomed the dignitaries with bouquets. The collaborative initiative brought together literary enthusiasts, clergy, and community leaders, creating an evening rich in cultural pride and reflective appreciation.
A Tribute to Language and Literature:
Dr. Michael D’Souza, Chief Guest and Founder of Vision Konkani & MDVK, delivered a powerful message on the enduring power of language and the urgency to preserve and promote Konkani heritage. He highlighted Vision Konkani’s ambitious plan to publish 100 high-quality books across languages (Konkani, Kannada, Hindi, English), with a budget of ₹40 lakhs. So far, 25 books have been published, with 15 more in the pipeline at various stages of printing.
Programme Highlights:
The event began with High Tea at 4:30 PM, followed by the formal programme at 5:00 PM.
The gathering was set in motion with the devotional Konkani hymn “Poilen Tuka Harsitelyam Dhaniya”, invoking the blessings of the Almighty.
H. M. (Henry Mendonca) Pernal introduced the author, offering a heartfelt profile of Dr. Eugene D’Souza, his literary journey, and accolades.
The author was honoured with a traditional shawl and memento by the Bishop and dignitaries on stage.
HM Pernal also elaborated on the vision and mission of ‘Vision Konkani’, encouraging emerging writers to seize the opportunities available.
The entire event was well-curetted, house-full, and meticulously managed, with praise showered on the flawless presentation by HM Pernal.

The emotional peak of the evening came with the vote of thanks by Dr. Eugene D’Souza, where he fondly recalled his nostalgic memories spanning five decades. He gratefully acknowledged the unwavering support of his parents, wife, family, neighbours, and friends. Special mention was made of:
