ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳ ಮೌನ ಒಪ್ಪಿಗೆ ಪಡೆದು ಅಕ್ರಮ ಮರಳು ದಂಧೆ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಜಾಗೃತಿ ಮೂಡಿಸುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ನಡೆಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಕೆಥೋಲಿಕ್ ಸಭಾದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಅಲ್ವಿನ್ ಡಿಸೋಜಾ, ಮಾಜಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಸ್ಟ್ಯಾನಿ ಲೋಬೋ, ಡಾಲ್ಫಿ ಡಿಕೋಸ್ಟಾ, ಫರಂಗಿಪೇಟೆ ಚರ್ಚ್‌ನ ಧರ್ಮಗುರುಗಳಾದ ಫಾ.ಮನೋಹರ್ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಹಲವಾರು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ನಾಯಕರು ಅಕ್ರಮ ಮರಳುಗಾರಿಕೆ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗೆ ಬೆಂಬಲ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದರು. ಈ ಅಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಭೂವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಗಣಿ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಪೊಲೀಸರು ಶಾಮೀಲಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಸಿಪಿಐ(ಎಂ) ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಮುಖಂಡ ಮುನೀರ್ ಕಾಟಿಪಳ್ಳ ಆರೋಪಿಸಿದರು. ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಮರಳು ಸಾಗಣೆ ವಾಹನಗಳಿಗೆ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆಯತ್ತ ಕಣ್ಣು ಮುಚ್ಚಿ ಮಾಸಿಕ ಲಂಚ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಆರೋಪಿಸಿದರು. ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಪಕ್ಷಗಳು ಈ ಅಕ್ರಮ ಮಾಫಿಯಾಗಳಿಗೆ ಬೆಂಬಲ ನೀಡುತ್ತಿವೆ ಎಂದು ಕಾಟಿಪಳ್ಳ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಡೈಜಿವರ್ಲ್ಡ್‌ನಂತಹ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಗಳ ನಿರಂತರ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮ ಪ್ರಸಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾವೂರ್ ಉಳಿಯ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳಿಂದ ಹಲವಾರು ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಗಳ ಹೊರತಾಗಿಯೂ, ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.
ಕಾಟಿಪಳ್ಳ ಪಾವೂರು ಉಳಿಯ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತೀವ್ರ ಕಳವಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿ, ಅನಿಯಂತ್ರಿತ ಅಕ್ರಮ ಗಣಿಗಾರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ 40 ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ಜೀವಕ್ಕೆ ಅಪಾಯವಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಆಡಳಿತ ಮಂಡಳಿ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಕ್ರಮ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳಲು ವಿಫಲವಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಗ್ರ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ನಡೆಸುವುದಾಗಿ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ನೀಡಿದರು.
ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆರೆದಿದ್ದ ಜನರನ್ನುದ್ದೇಶಿಸಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ ಸುನೀಲ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಬಜಾಲ್, ಈ ಹೋರಾಟ ಕೇವಲ ಪಾವೂರು ಉಳಿಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಉಳ್ಳಾಲ ಹೊಯ್ಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಣಿಪುರಕ್ಕೂ ಹೋರಾಟವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಒತ್ತಿ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಸಂತ್ರಸ್ತ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಕಡಿಮೆ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅವರ ಹೋರಾಟಕ್ಕೆ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಾದ್ಯಂತ ವ್ಯಾಪಕ ಬೆಂಬಲವಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು. “ಈ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಯು ಆಡಳಿತ ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರ ನಡುವೆ ಇದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೆರೆದಿರುವ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಜನರು ದ್ವೀಪ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು ನ್ಯಾಯ ಸಿಗುವವರೆಗೂ ನಾವು ಹೋರಾಟವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ” ಎಂದು ಬಜಾಲ್ ಹೇಳಿದರು.
ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ರಾಯ್ ಕ್ಯಾಸ್ಟೆಲಿನ್ಹೋ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಹತಾಶೆಯನ್ನು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದರು. ‘ನಾವು ಆಡಳಿತದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಈ ಅಕ್ರಮ ಮರಳುಗಾರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಬಯಲಿಗೆಳೆಯುವ ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವನ್ನು ಜಿಲ್ಲಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇಲಾಖಾ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇದು ಇಡೀ ದ್ವೀಪದ ನಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಕೈವಾಡವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ’ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಅನ್ಯಾಯದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಜನರು ಒಗ್ಗಟ್ಟಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಹೋರಾಟವನ್ನು ಬೀದಿಗಿಳಿಸುವುದಾಗಿ ಕ್ಯಾಸ್ಟೆಲಿನ್ಹೋ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ಮಾಡಿದರು.
Pavoor Uliya illegal sand mining – Catholic Sabha organizes massive protest
Like-minded groups, including Catholic Sabha, ICYM, YCS, and Mother Theresa Vichara Vedike, staged a massive protest against illegal sand mining in the district and the administration’s apathy towards the issue on Friday, September 27, in front of Mini Vidhana Soudha in Mangaluru.
The protest aimed to raise awareness about the illegal sand mining allegedly carried out with the tacit approval of local officials. Several prominent leaders, including Alwyn D’Souza, president of Catholic Sabha Mangaluru, former presidents Stany Lobo and Dolphie D’Costa, and Fr Manohar, parish priest of Farangipet Church, were present to support the cause Addressing the issue of illegal sand mining, Muneer Katipalla, leader of the CPI(M) Karnataka, accused the geology and mining department and local police of being complicit in the illegal activity. He alleged that officials are protecting sand transport vehicles and accepting monthly bribes to turn a blind eye to the operations. Katipalla further claimed that all major political parties are supporting these illegal mafias. Despite continuous media coverage by outlets like Daijiworld and numerous protests by residents of Pavoor Uliya, authorities remain unresponsive.
Katipalla expressed deep concern for the residents of Pavoor Uliya, stating that the lives of 40 families are under threat due to the unchecked illegal mining. He warned of stronger protests if the administration fails to take immediate action.
Addressing the crowd at the protest, Sunil Kumar Bajal emphasized that the fight is not just for Pavoor Uliya but also for Ullal Hoige and Ranipura. He stated that although the affected residents are few in number, the support for their cause is widespread across the district. “This protest is between the administration and the common people. The thousands gathered here stand with the island residents, and we will continue to fight until justice is served,” Bajal said.
Roy Castelinho, another speaker, voiced his frustration with local authorities. He stated, “We have lost faith in the administration. The district commissioner and departmental officials are ignoring our efforts to expose this illegal sand mining. This suggests their involvement in the destruction of an entire island.” Castelinho vowed to shift the fight to the streets, stating that the people are united against the ongoing injustice.
