“Annual Feast Unveiled: Flag Hoisting Marks Start of Celebrations at Harihar Basilica”

Davanagere; 2023: All roads led to the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Health in Harihar on August 30, 2023.

The Annual Feast of Harihar Matha Basilica began with the hoisting of the flag by Most Rev. Dr. Francis Serrao SJ, Bishop of the Diocese of Shimoga, and Sri. S. S. Mallikarjun, Hon’ble Minister of Mines & Geology and Horticulture, Govt. of Karnataka. The Rector of the Basilica, Rev. Fr. George K A, welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering.

Flagging off the nine-day celebrations, Bishop Francis Serrao SJ urged the faithful to imbibe the values of Mother Mary, who wipes the tears of the distressed.

Thousands of devotees from all walks of life, some clad in saffron, witnessed the event. The sudden inflow of pilgrims threw the traffic out of gear in the city. Many priests of the diocese concelebrated the high mass with Bishop Francis Serrao SJ. The theme of the homily was: “The life of Mother Mary is the source of inspiration for women.”

After the Eucharist, priests blessed the devotees by laying their hands on their heads. Following the celebrations, the devotees took part in the “Anna Santharapane” (Food).

Prayers were held for the farmers, rains, as well as for the leaders. State Minister S S Mallikarjun inaugurated the event and also hoisted the flag along with His Grace Bishop Francis Serrao SJ. He wished all the devotees well and prayed for the good of all. Mr. Nandigavi Shrinivas, the young, energetic, and vibrant Congress youth leader, was also felicitated at the function. This function was successfully hosted by Gnanaprakash D, the secretary of the parish.

Annual feast of Our Lady of Health Basilica, Harihar, Davanagere District, Diocese of Shimoga Christianity has a long history in the state of Karnataka. The history of Our Lady of Health Church dates back to the 18th century. A new Church dedicated to Our Lady of Health was built on 31st August 1992. On 27th May 2012, the shrine was officially declared as a Diocesan Shrine of the Diocese of Shimoga. The Vatican has raised the Shrine of Our Lady of Health, Harihar to the status of a Minor Basilica on 18th September 2019. This is the third shrine in Karnataka to have received the status of Minor Basilica after St. Mary’s Minor Basilica in the Archdiocese of Bangalore and St. Lawrence Minor Basilica in the Diocese of Udupi. The official celebration of this milestone was held on 15th January 2020. Festival of Our Lady of Good Health: The feast of Our Lady of Good Health is celebrated every year on September 8th – on the day of Nativity. There is a chariot procession carrying the statue of Our Lady of Good Health. The Chariot would be decked with (Sevanthige) Chrysanthemum flowers sourced from Arsikere. This year’s festival begins on August 30th. Most Rev. Dr Francis Serrao SJ, Bishop of Diocese of Shimoga will hoist the flag of Blessed Virgin Mary. Shri. S. S. Mallikarjun, Hon’ble Minister of Mine & Geology and Horticulture, Government of Karnataka will be the chief guest. From August 30th to September 7th, every day at 5:30pm there will be procession, Novena, Floral Homage, Holy Eucharist, Adoand healing prayer for the Sick will be led by different priests. On September 7th evening 5:30pm Mass will be offered by Most Rev. Dr Robert Miranda, Bishop of Diocese of Gulbarga. Then there will be Adoration and healing service led by Fr Franklin D’Souza, Fr Roman Pinto and Bro. T. K. George. On September 8th festal day there will be Masses in various languages. 5:15am in Kannada, 6:15am in Telugu, 7:15am in Malayalam (Syro Malabar Rite) by Most Rev. Dr Joseph Arumachadath, Bishop of Diocese of Bhadravati, 8:45am in Tamil, 10am in English, 11am festal Mass by Most Rev. Dr Francis Serrao SJ, Bishop of Diocese of Shimoga. At 1:15pm Mass in Konkani, 2:30pm healing adoration by Yesusparsha Team. 4pm Mass in Kannada, 5pm Solemn procession, 7pm Mass in Kannada. Rev. Fr George K A, Rector of Our Lady of Health Basilica had already made all preparations together with the faithful of Harihar.

Milagres Parish hosts a special gathering for parish doctors

Milagres Parish, a dynamic Catholic community in Mangalore, hosted a special gathering for its doctors on Sunday, August 27, 2023. The event was aimed at connecting and interacting with the doctors of the parish, who serve in various domains in and around Mangalore.

The program commenced with a prayer song rendered by the youth. Rev. Fr. Bonaventure Nazareth, the Parish Priest, greeted the doctors of the parish. He said it was an informal gathering just to establish rapport with the doctors of the parish and engage with them. He said Milagres parish is affluent as 68 doctors are residing within the jurisdiction of Milagres parish and serving in various domains in and around Mangalore. He highlighted the qualities of doctors through 3 A’s: Ability, Availability and Affability. He lauded the doctors for being part of the parish and their service.

Mrs. Sangeeta Fernandes and Mrs. Farida Goveas conducted a few interesting games for the doctors. The doctors participated in all the games enthusiastically. Mrs. Shaila Lobo and her team sang some melodious numbers.

A comedy skit on doctors “Variety is the spice of life” was well enacted by the committee members. The entire program was well-emceed by committee member Mr. Melwin Vas.

Dr. Edwin Dias and Dr. Ryan Fernandes shared their insights and experiences as Doctors and as parishioners.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs. Wilma Andrade, the convener of the health commission of the parish, expressing gratitude to the doctors and their services to society recalling the COVID pandemic and how the doctors across the world served people at large and emerged as true heroes. She thanked the Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Bonaventure Nazareth for this novel idea of bringing together the doctors of Milagres parish. This entire program was well organized by the members of the Health Commission, along with the coordinator of all commissions Mrs. Lynette Fernandes, and the Parish Clergy.

There were 50 doctors present for this gathering.
Dr. Shannon Fernandes thanked the organizers of the event on behalf of all the doctors for the beautiful program and for providing them an opportunity to get connected with the parish doctors.

The program concluded with grace before a meal and a sumptuous meal.

Catholic Board – Second Batch of two days workshop for Higher Primary and High School teachers

Shanthi Kiran Counsellig Centre, Bajjodi, Mangalore, in coordination with Catholic Board of
Education and Chair in Christianity (Mangalore University), Mangalore, organised the
Second Batch of two days workshop for Higher Primary and High School teachers on
Psychological First Aid on 17th and 18th August 2023 at Milagres College Auditoruim,
Mangalore. The workshop programme was presided and inaugurated by V. Rev Fr Antony
Shera, the Secretary, Catholic Board of Education, Mangalore. In his presidential address, he
said that teachers are the primary resources and counsellors of our institutions. They are able
to mould and guide our students by incorporating adequate skills by participating in these
workshops. He wished all the participants a fruitful learning during the course of the sessions.
The workshop was concluded on 18th August 2023. His Excellency Most Rev Dr Peter Paul
Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese and the President of Catholic Board of Education,
presided over the concluding ceremony. In his presidential address, Bishop said that the
teachers are the second mothers to the students. As they spend most of the times in the
school, students become closer to them and they come to know each individual student
personally. As a result, they are able understand and guide them well. On this occasion, he
gave away the certificate of participation to all the participant teachers. Rev Fr Arun Lobo,
Director of Shanthi Kiran Counselling Centre, Rev Dr Ivan Dsouza, Head of Chair in
Christianity, Rev Fr Joseph Uday Fernandes, Prinicipal, Milagres Central SCchool,
Mangalore and Rev Fr Victor Dsouza, Assistant Director, Shanthi Kiran Counselling Centre,
Mangalore were present. Mrs Jennifer Menezes and Mrs Molly Lobo shared the experience
of the two days workshop. Mrs Prithi Maria Lobo thanked the organizers. Mrs Jacintha Mary
Peris compered the valedictory programme.
Psychological First Aid (PAF) is an evidence informed approach that is built upon the
concept of human resilience. PFA aims to reduce stress symptoms and assist in a healthy
recovery. There are four steps of PFA: Learn Look, Listen and Link. The same concept
evolved and introduced by Shanthi Kiran Counselling Centre, a Unit of Mangalore Diocese,
in organising the Psychological First Aid workshops for teachers. It will help the teachers in
understanding and guiding their students to have a wholistic growth.
These workshops have been organised by Shanthi Kiran Counselling Centre since 2015 for
the Higher Primary and High School teachers under the management of Catholic Board of
Education, Mangalore, in an alternative years in three batches. In this academic year 2023-24,
the First Batch of workshop was held at Bantwal-Modankap for Belthangady, Puttur, Bantwal
and Vittal zones. The Second Batch for Mangalore Episcopal, City, Surathkal, Kirem,
Moodbidri, Pezar and Permannur zones. The Third Batch will be going to be held at Kumbla
for Kasaragod zone.

Day 8: Eighth day’s Novena at Our Lady of Health Minor Basilica, Harihara

Davanagere, Harihara, September 6, 2023: Eighth day’s Novena at Our Lady of Health, Minor Basilica, Harihara, Davanagere District, Diocese of Shimoga, began at 5:30pm with Rosary, Procession and floral homages to Harihara Matha. Then Basilica Rector & Parish Priest Rev. Fr George K. A led the Novena.

At 6:30pm Rev. Fr Duming Dias, Director of Diocesan Pastoral Renewal Centre ‘Sannidhi’, Shivamogga offered Holy Eucharist. He preached his homily on the theme: “Mother Mary is an inspiration to take care of the Sick in the family”.

In his homily explained that how families have shattered due to sickness. Places like Harihara Basilica gives hope to the people those who come over here with sickness. In the Bible we Jesus how Jesus heals the Sick and suffering. Blessed Mother intercedes for all those who seek her help and God hears her prayers. Taking care of the sick and suffering needs lot of patience in one’s life. We have to learn from Blessed Mother’s life serenity, service, humility and generosity.

Manglooru : St Agnes PU College Teachers Day

Manglooru: Teachers Day is celebrated every year with great gaiety and ardor. This day marks the birth anniversary of Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishna, the first Vice –President of India. On this day, students pay homage to their teachers who have selflessly strived to make their students excel not only in academics, but also helped mould them into good human beings. The day recognizes the pivotal role that teachers play and the profound impact they have on students.

The day began with a solemn prayer song by students invoking the blessings of the Almighty on their beloved teachers. The rest of the day wore a festive hue as the students regaled the teachers with games and innovative cultural Programmes. The teachers were highly appreciative of the ingenuity and flair with which the students took the event to a new level altogether.

The Parents Teachers Association too went to immense trouble to showcase their love, respect and regard for the teachers by putting up a dazzling entertainment programme coupled with games and exciting prizes. They were very laudatory of the role teacher’s play in a student’s life. Mr Joel Fernandes, Department of Physics expressed the sentiments of the staff and management when he thanked the PTA members. The event concluded with a fellowship meal in honour of teachers.
